TikTok Shop Transactions: What they mean and how to account for them

An explanation of the transaction types in A2X for TikTok Shop and what they mean for your accounting

Written by Elspeth Cordray

A2X imports the order and transaction data from TikTok Shop and maps it into accounting transactions in your accounting system. To do that, A2X needs to know how you want to map each type of transaction - you configure this on the Accounts and Taxes page.

The right mapping will depend on the type of business you operate, which countries and tax jurisdictions you sell in, and the kind of financial reporting you need. We recommend working with your accountant on the initial setup.

Sales

  • Product Sales - revenue from the sale of goods. In the UK, standard-rated products are mapped at 20% VAT on Income for UK buyers and Zero Rated for non-UK buyers. In the US, select No Tax as sales tax is handled separately.

  • Refunds - amounts refunded to customers for returned or cancelled orders. The tax rate applied will match the original sale.

  • Seller Discounts - discounts funded by the seller and deducted from the sale amount.

  • Seller Discount Refunds - the seller discount returned to the seller when a customer refunds an order.

Shipping Income

  • Customer Paid Shipping - shipping fee paid by the buyer.

  • Shipping Fee Subsidy - a subsidy paid by TikTok to the seller to offset shipping costs under TikTok's co-funded free shipping programme.

  • Platform Shipping Fee Discount - a discount on shipping funded by TikTok rather than the seller. This is a reimbursement from TikTok.

  • Free Return Subsidy - reimbursement from TikTok covering return shipping costs for qualifying sellers.

Discounts

  • Platform-Funded Discounts - discounts funded by TikTok rather than the seller. These appear as income to the seller (a reimbursement from TikTok) and are surfaced separately.

Fees

  • Referral Fee / Platform Commission - TikTok's commission on each sale, typically a percentage of the sale price.

  • Affiliate Commission - commission paid to TikTok creators who promote your products. In the UK, mapped as Zero Rated Expenses because TikTok does not issue a VAT invoice for affiliate commissions. See Affiliate fees in TikTok Shop for more detail.

  • Return Shipping Fee - fee charged to the seller for return shipping.

  • FBT Fulfillment Fee - fee charged by TikTok for fulfilling orders through Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT).

  • Refund Administration Fee - a fee charged by TikTok when a seller refunds an order, charged as a percentage of the original referral fee.

Advertising

  • Smart Promotion Fee - fee for TikTok's Smart Promotion advertising programme, charged as a percentage of GMV from qualifying orders.

  • Campaign Period Fee - fee for participating in TikTok's promotional campaign events.

Reserves

  • Reserve Collected / Reserve Released - TikTok holds reserves against potential returns. These go to a balance sheet account (TikTok Reserved Balance) rather than the P&L because they are timing differences, not actual income or expenses.

Tax

  • Sales Tax / Marketplace Facilitator Tax - in the US, TikTok collects and remits sales tax as a marketplace facilitator. These amounts are posted to a liability account (TikTok Sales Tax Collected) and do not form part of the seller's revenue.

  • Retail Delivery Fee - a Colorado-specific government-mandated fee. TikTok collects and remits this to the Colorado Department of Revenue. Also posted to TikTok Sales Tax Collected.

Other

If you see transactions in the Other category, it means A2X has not yet categorised them. Please feel free to reach out to the A2X support team.
